Meet the Coaching Staff

  Jay Spencer, Head Coach

I first arrived in Pottstown in 1979, as a "second former", or eighth grader, at The Hill School. After graduating from Hill in 1984, I attended Uppingham School in England through the English-Speaking Union exchange program.

I swam in both summer and winter throughout high school, and continued swimming in England. I then attended Vanderbilt University on a Navy ROTC scholarship, earning both a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Math and a master's degree in Electrical Engineering in 1989. I immediately accepted my commission in the Navy and began what became a 20-year career in submarines. After duty stations in Orlando, FL; Charleston, SC; Groton, CT; Silverdale, WA; Arlington, VA; Monterey, CA; Valparaiso, Chile; San Diego, CA; the Pentagon; and Millington, TN, I finished my career in command of the Navy's submarine rescue forces at the Deep Submergence Unit in San Diego.

I returned to The Hill School in the fall of 2009 to pursue my lifelong dream of teaching and coaching. I teach math and coach swimming and water polo. I live in Robins dormitory with my wife, Kristin, and four children, two of whom swam for North End last summer. My coaching career at North End started in 2010 when one of my swimmers at the Hill mentioned to me that a coaching opportunity would be coming available and suggested that I look into it. I had a fantastic first season, and I'm looking forward to the 2011 season already.
